At that point it was expected to release in 2021, but that then slid back to 2022 (alongside a new publishing partnership with Prime Matter), and eventually 2023. The 2023 remake of Looking Glass’ 1994 PC touchstone emphasizes just how important System Shock is to modern video games. The first tangible progress was seen with the release of an alpha demo in 2020, followed by an updated demo in 2021. However, development has gone back and forth, starting with a game engine swap from Unity to Unreal Engine in 2017, before development was put on hold in 2018 and restarted with a new team. System Shock currently has a release window of March 2023, meaning it could release anytime in that month if everything stays on track. There’s no date yet for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 or Xbox One versions of the game, but given the number of delays the game has had, it’s probably wisest just to take assurance that System Shock is coming to console eventually.This System Shock remake was partially funded by a Kickstarter that ran in the middle of 2016, at the time with an estimated release of December 2017. The news comes as the System Shock remake is due for release on May 30th for PC. The studio has also reworked the co-op multiplayer too. Nightdive Studios has been working closely with System Shock fans to integrate mods and updates that have been created previously into this version.

It remains to be seen whether the problems faced over the past six years of development will have hindered the studios’ desire to pay it fair tribute. System Shock is a hugely beloved game, a genuine classic in an era that tosses that phrase around liberally. It’s understandably tough to approach this release with 100% confidence, given the multitude of hurdles it has had to clear en route to fruition. The launch of System Shock will finally put the long development cycle to rest, and will hopefully result in a faithful recreation of one of the genuine classics of the sci-fi/horror genre. A few short in-game clips are featured, but unfortunately, there is no full trailer, which will hopefully be incoming soon.

In addition to the release window, developer Prime Matter has released several new images, showcasing the locations, enemies, and weapons that will be encountered by the player as they pick their way through Citadel Station en route to a fateful encounter with the terrifying rogue A.I.: SHODAN.
